(If you’re not much of a reader but are interested in this topic, this series has been condensed into a 43min sermon that I was privileged to share with my church family in Manchester earlier this year. Click here.)
Welcome to the end of the Secret Place Series. If you’re just joining us, I really encourage you to jump back to the beginning! Not simply because you won’t understand the context, but also because you’ll miss out on the great picture sequence designed by my wonderful sister Joanna.
1John 4:4 says “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
The devil doesn’t run away from us because we’re big, powerful and scary but because of Who is standing with us!
The devil doesn’t run because we shout loudly but because the Lion of Judah roars!
I know that the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword and the sword of the Spirit is the word of God. So my words have supernatural power attached to them as long as I say what He says.
There’s a lot of talk in the Church at the moment that is sounding like worldly self-help philosophy sprinkled with Christianese language. But James says “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) Our submitting to God in humility releases Christ in us to come out! Our self-belief, self-confidence and self-esteem aren’t enough for this battle. It has to be Him, His presence, His power and His voice working through us!
This scene from the Lion King I think best describes what I’m talking about.
There is something powerful about waiting in the Secret Place as God gives us a word. We read about several of the prophets in the Bible speaking about the word of the Lord “coming to them.”
This was the same word that never returns without accomplishing what it’s sent to do. (Isaiah 55:11)
This was more than positive thinking or speaking. This was more than vain imagination or “naming and claiming”. These were the very words of God anointed by the Spirit of God.
Get ready for a deep theological truth that I think it’s important to understand:
When God speaks, stuff happens.
Deep right? Seriously though, when God said “let there be light”, there wasn’t even a Sun but light didn’t try to make that argument to God, it just came to be.
When Jesus said “peace, be still” to the storm, the wind and the waves didn’t argue with Him, they recognised the voice of the Creator.
When He commanded Peter to come to Him walking on the waves, Peter didn’t walk on the water, he walked on the words of Jesus!
The disciples marveled that even the demons obeyed them when they spoke to them on behalf of Jesus. They had to obey because the disciples spoke in Jesus’ name with His authority because He sent them. When the disciples spoke the demons heard God’s voice.
There is so much power in whatever God says and it’s the Secret Place lifestyle that enables us to get to know Him and hear His voice. We learn how He speaks to us and He impresses on our hearts and minds the truths about Him that we read in the Scriptures. That’s why there is such a battle over it! That’s why the world is set up to keep us superficial in our relationship with God.
When God gives us a word and we repeat it with faith, nothing can stand against it. Ask Michelle Williams! Haha!
In our 21st century microwave, instant-everything life, it can be easier to go around saying what we think God is saying because it takes time and effort to sit with Him and listen.
But I think it’s worth it. Don’t you?
We need the word of the Lord! It’s the only offensive weapon in the armour of God and I believe it is found in the Secret Place.
We need to know how to wield it with accuracy and precision and we need to know how to strengthen ourselves to carry it well.
I believe the word of God includes the Holy Scriptures but also includes words and promises spoken to us by the Holy Spirit. Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comea from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4) This is more than the written word but includes the words that continue to come from His mouth.
I heard a preacher once say that too many of us have a butter-knife of the Spirit instead of a sword. When the devil comes to lie to us about who we are or who God is we end up trying to spread butter on his back instead of slicing through his nonsense with God’s word!
In the lives of others we end up trying to give the bread of our advice instead every word that comes from the mouth of God that they really need!
Are you ready to go after this for real? Do you want to hear the Lion’s Roar in your life when you release the word of God into situations and see the enemy flee?
The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy?”
– Amos 3:8
I’d just like to pray in ending this series because it will be really easy to walk away from reading this post or the whole series and think “Well that was nice” without changing anything. Father I pray for everyone who reads this and the other posts that You would speak to our hearts and awaken our love for You. I pray that you would bring peace and healing to areas of our hearts that have been wounded and have been caused to seek comfort from the wrong sources. Make yourself the centre in our hearts. Teach us how to live from Your approval and no one else’s while living in close-hearted-community with each other. Give us the boldness that comes from Your love and shape us in the furnace of Your heart, burning away everything that’s not rooted in You and that doesn’t reflect Jesus.
In His name and for Your glory
